Abstract: Through the technological advances in data acquisition, storage, computing, analysis, and communication networks, huge amounts of multimedia data have become increasingly available and created new interesting technical possibilities in a variety of applications. This calls for the need for developing efficient and effective techniques for multimedia data management and retrieval with the help of advanced knowledge discovery methodologies, particularly in collaborative multimedia Web environments, when the rapid increase of social networks brings forth the interaction among a large number of people who share huge amounts of all types of multimedia information (text, images, videos, etc.).  In this talk, I will introduce the major components in developing a coherent framework for multimedia data management and retrieval systems, ranging from multimedia data processing to indexing, query, retrieval, and presentation. Specifically, a set of core techniques, such as multimedia data analysis, content-based image/video retrieval, and multimedia data mining, will be discussed in details and demonstrated using a prototype system. In addition, I will present the idea of applying these techniques to practical application domains such as disaster information management.
